  • Designer Notes: TMOD

    T-Mod products @ Pigeonhole

Georgie Swift and Milenka Osen from TMOD like to look at things differently. These Australian designers put a new spin on each product they make, whether it be greeting cards, things for the home, or jewellery. What we like about TMOD is how they seek to create new ways for people to interact with every day items and breathe life into product categories that are otherwise a bit mundane. Check out the interview below for a behind the scenes look!

1.What’s the best part about being a designer?
The best part is the freedom to create. We can be creative in a range of mediums and express ourselves through this, as well as doing something different everyday.

2.What was your first fashion-related creation?
We started by designing interactive jewellery before we moved into our stationery and lifestyle products.
'Oh Fiddlesticks' was our first range of jewellery where we created a purpose to the act of fiddling by creating game puzzle necklaces.

    TMOD Workspace

3.Your biggest source of inspiration comes from…
We are inspired through travel and seeing new things in a different way each day.
We love to be moving and visiting new places, and draw inspiration from everything around us, as cheesy as that sounds, it's true.

4.Any words of wisdom for those who wish to follow in your footsteps?
Just to follow your dreams and trust yourself. Along the way we have encountered a lot of set backs and you just have to really believe in yourself and your creative products and designs because then all your hard work and passion will pay off.
Be patient and give it your all. It really is worth working hard for, as there is nothing more satisfying then creating a positive experience for people and this is what we aim to do through our designs. Put a smile on people's faces and this is worth working hard for.

Here are some of the TMOD products available in our online and retail stores!

    TMOD Macrame Kit

The TMOD Macrame Kit includes everything you need to hang your plants in a compact little package. Also available in blue.

    TMOD Chalkboard @ Pigeonhole

    Scratchie Cards

Finally, these scratchie cards are a such a great idea! You can see what TMOD mean when they say "interactive stationery". View the card pictured above here, or view all our cards here (featuring some other great card ideas from TMOD).

  • Designer Notes: Bellroy

    Hadrien Monloup @ Pigeonhole

We caught up with Hadrien Monloup from Bellroy to get an inside look into how they design their awesome wallets and sleeves. Check out the short interview below!

1.What’s the best part about being a designer?
This may sound a bit corny, but making a vision possible, a physical object that our team will believe in and fight for. A product that people will use and love that will help them in their everyday living. And then making it better...and better. I believe that great product and brand brings people together. There is a great community around Bellroy. I only work on products I feel I can create such connection.
I want my designs to be functional, elegant and with an ounce of surprise or poetry.

    Bellroy Design Philosophy

2.What was your first fashion-related creation?
It was a military looking canvas bag for a fashion capsule at Rip Curl. It was a disaster! Although I did see a guy in Melbourne with it a few weeks back, so I guess somebody liked it! I've always been a more technical designer than a pure fashion designer. I need reason to do things. I love limited briefs. The less room to move the more challenging, that's my world. Free design doesn't interest me as much. Fashion design is like free design for me and offers too many options. I find design more interesting that way because I have to ask the right questions, to find the right insight. You can't hide with fancy design lines. It must work first, then be elegant. Fashion comes and goes, elegance and style lasts. I like that, but it is much harder to find. I am still learning what makes great design, what is elegance vs fashion style. It's a fascinating journey.

    Sketches

3.Your biggest source of inspiration comes from…
I love looking around, reading blogs showcasing incredibly talented creatives around the globe. There is such a constant flow of interesting material out there. Pinterest is my latest favourite source of inspiration. I need diversity to create. Graphic design, illustration, product, architecture. I expose myself to a lot of media.

    Working Hard

4.Who do you look up to?
That really depends on what I am looking for. I have so much respect for Dana Gleason. All the way from Dana Design to Mystery Ranch, his products have taught me the importance of pattern making in soft good design. Arcteryx, Boreas and more recently Aether, all these brands are looking for insights, more so than just the next design. I love that. Insights go straight to the essence of the object we try to create, it's 'raison d'être' (reason to be). You can feel it when you see it. It makes all the difference and it lasts. I also look at Mr porter, Property of and ACNEstudio for style. I guess a lot of the brands mentioned on Carryology. I put just the same emphasis on materials. A good product is nothing without the right material. Using leathers I definitely look up to Horween Leathers.

    Bellroy at Pigeonhole

5.Any words of wisdom for those who wish to follow in your footsteps?
My advice… cultivate a growth mind set. Review your assumptions on the most basic things, finding it's essence by removing anything unnecessary. This often hides a gap in the thinking process. Resist the need to over design, keep it simple. Never take criticism personally. A design is just a representation of a thinking process at a point in time, that needs more information and perspective to improve and find its real form.

  • Pigeonhole Treetop Catwalk Show - Thank You Everyone!

    Pigeonhole Treetop Launch

What a Wednesday night! The store was packed, everyone had a drink in hand and the show went off without a hitch! A lot went into the show behind the scenes, and we'd like to recognise the work that was done by so many amazing people.

    Scene @ Pigeonhole

Scene Models provided faces for the catwalk and they did a really great job. Early nerves were shaken off by the time the show commenced and everyone hit their marks.

Sam from SceneYou may recognise Sam from our Frankie advert last month! Most of these guys are up and coming, so expect to see them a whole lot more from them soon.

    Jackie @ Pigeonhole

Jacqui Bradfield did an excellent job with the makeup as usual, everyone looked amazing and appropriately detailed with woodland cues.

    Back room crew

Zoe, Maevana and Callie made sure everything was prepped and ran like smooth peanut butter out the back. (Note: I prefer crunchy and you should too)

    Bela at Pigeonhole

We were lucky enough to have Bela from the Transients on board to do the music during the catwalk. He put together a custom set for the evening featuring music from Big Black Delta, Charlie XCX, Daft Punk and Two Door Cinema Club.

The show was a great way to showcase Pigeonhole original products alongside new and existing stocked brands. We saw some great outfits featuring Cameo, Romance Was Born, Hansel & Gretel, Lilya, Neuw Denim, Nudie Jeans, Insight, Lazy Oaf and Native Youth. If you are interested in any of the clothes you've seen in videos, blog posts or pictures of the night just visit our Forrest Chase or Shafto Lane stores!

Thanks to Kate and Zoe for styling the outfits! This is a job that takes a lot longer than it might seem, and when you throw eight rapid changes into the mix it takes real skill to pull off!

    Silk Top Cool Crowd Applause

To the immaculately dressed friends that visited us on the night (that is all of you!) it was really a pleasure to have you there to check out the new store. Thanks for making it and we hope you had fun!

    Me

Finally a personal thank you to Drakesbrook wines for the delicious red and white wines that were served over the course of the evening. Drakesbrook is owned by a great down to earth winemaker from WA's own Peel region so keep an eye out for them next time you are browsing through bottles!
